Speaking with passion on the multidimensional release, Jean-Philippe Ruelle confesses, “You know what? You have no idea how much fun I had making this track, from the initial concept to the final mix, to the making of the music video. Pure joy, sparks in my brain, and tingling in my fingers. My dearest wish in sharing it with you is that you, too, can feel the joy I had creating COMPULSEIN.”

This joy definitely transmutes, and the music video is a trippy, hyper-colour delight that fits the adrenaline-inducing, neon-lit universe that the composer channels. At moments we feel like we are underwater, with almost whale sounds, whilst at other moments, we feel like we are in space, and a crystal blue sky, high on magic mushrooms. Switeewave manifests a psychedelic appeal too in its construction which feels innately organic and human, yet simultaneously like a melody from God.

Speaking on his intention behind the release, the visionary composer says, “I wanted to create a cocoon in which we can take refuge, snuggle up. I don’t have a big story to tell you for this single, the winter period sent me on a track full of warmth, of softness. Back to the simplicity of a melody sometimes highlighted, sometimes masked by its own harmonies, but always restrained, almost out of shyness.”

“Don’t be surprised if I explore very different musical styles – I strive to use the best sonic and musical setting for the ideas that matter to me. Through this incredible medium that is musical composition, I try to convey them as sincerely as possible”, continues Jean-Philippe Ruelle.

We have recently featured the remarkable artistry of Jean-Philippe Ruelle, notably by exploring the Callpeax which served as a meditation on peace, and more recently Impulsein which was a bold and emotive track exploring love, created with Micheline Van Hautem, so you can imagine how excited we were to discover his latest opus, The Lake of Signs.

The composition opens with an optimistic harpsichord melody, intertwined with a playful and boundless bass guitar, expanding with a luscious, orchestral strings arrangement, textured percussion and the intricacy and cinematic allure that so many of Jean-Philippe Ruelle‘s pieces hold.

The Lake of Signs has an emotive edge, and also taps into a sense of ancient-futurism, this is in part to the percussive elements and the rolling drums, as well as the 8-bit-esque bass notes, which almost feel like a video game.

That said, the piece could certainly be featured in the original soundtrack for a film based around a Nintendo character or a SEGA character, like Mario or Sonic. There is a momentary shift mid-way through the piece with glistening astral notes that send us transcendental, a middle eight almost with a strings arrangement that taps into our heart’s centre.

The main body of the composition resumes once more with a serene and resplendent finale with the final chord changes evoking drama, almost leading us through to the next chapter with intrigue. We eventually learn that the psychedelic-adjacent opus is inspired by Terry Gillam‘s Brazil, which is set in a retro-future world, where a clerk in the ministry department, is given the task to rectify an administrative error. However, in the process, he becomes the enemy of the state!

Speaking on his artistry as a whole, Jean-Philippe Ruelle confesses, “Don’t be surprised if I explore very different musical styles, I strive to use the best sonic and musical setting for the ideas that matter to me. Through this incredible medium that is musical composition, I try to convey them as sincerely as possible.”

We previously explored the encoded echoes of Callpeax, which served as a sonic meditation on the audacity of peace by Jean-Philippe Ruelle, so when we found out that the visionary artist was back with Impulsein, we were curious to say the least and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.

Drawing us in with a cyber synth and pounding bass drums with intricate vocal textures, Impulsein opens with a cerebral edge, taping into an 80s meets 8-bit adjacency. The opus expands with a melodic synthline, layered with stunning astral vocals. The composition feels spiritual whilst also being high octane. There is a high emotional quotient that manifests from Micheline Van Heatem‘s vocals. 

Mid-way through Impulsein we experience an intimate piano interlude with textured vocals from Micheline Van Heatem, tapping into an ethereal and transcendental vibe that has us in awe. The finale showcases her vocal range, whilst reminding us of Jean-Philippe Ruelle breathtaking instrumentals and we can only imagine how incredible this would be to experience live.

Impulsein is an audacious and masterful exploration of human emotions, presented as a musical work in two distinct parts. Through its bold structure and contrasting styles, the piece captures the essence of love’s intense yet ephemeral nature, taking us on a transformative journey.

The first part bursts with vibrant energy, embodying the excitement of a romantic impulse.
