Establishing the mood with a descending yet dynamic astral synthscape and a dimensional, cerebral bassline, Jean-Philippe Ruelle opens COMPULSEIN with intrigue and a cinematic allure. We are hypnotized by the energy and kaleidoscope, almost psychedelic vibes.
The drama builds with an epic strings arrangement, perfect for a James Bond 007 movie or the Mission Impossible franchise. Cosmic vocal synths add further intentionality to the piece, and we appreciate the ebbs and flows and the drama that the composition exudes.
The instrumental mastery is genius. A key change takes us by surprise, and we are invited to connect with the composition on an almost more trippy level, if that is even possible. The cohesive tapestry of sound that manifests is sublime, and we appreciate the technical detail that has gone into bringing this to life.
The sound design of COMPULSEIN includes subtle horror movie motifs, whirring bass moments like a car screeching its tyres and a human element from the vocal layers all add energy that keeps us enthralled. The final breakdown only leaves us yearning for more.
Speaking with passion on the multidimensional release, Jean-Philippe Ruelle confesses, “You know what? You have no idea how much fun I had making this track, from the initial concept to the final mix, to the making of the music video. Pure joy, sparks in my brain, and tingling in my fingers. My dearest wish in sharing it with you is that you, too, can feel the joy I had creating COMPULSEIN.”
This joy definitely transmutes, and the music video is a trippy, hyper-colour delight that fits the adrenaline-inducing, neon-lit universe that the composer channels. We can feel shades of Kavinsky’s noir-cyber energy, the textured elegance of Röyksopp, and the unmistakable Jean-Michel Jarre sense of cosmic wonder, who are all cited as influences for the record.
Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added COMPULSEIN to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the brilliant and visionary Jean-Philippe Ruelle!
