Music Video: Lorde – Tennis Court (+ The Love Club EP)
Published June 30, 2013Granted that I posted this video six days ago on the KARL IS MY UNKLE Facebook page, the fact that I have spent every day since then listening to the track incessantly meant that it clearly warrants and deserves its own post.
Here is the video for Tennis Court from New Zealand native, Lorde (birth name: Ella Yelich-O’Connor). With understandable comparisons to Lana, Sky, Grimes, Regina Spektor and Marina, which is only ever a compliment in my eyes, the track has this narrative and compelling darkness lyrically which has been brought to life in the subtlest of ways – with a single shot video to which she doesn’t lip-synch. Instead, it all comes through in her eyes. As with any artist listening to their own art, the reaction and emotion evoked even with a camera on their face is truer than any staged reaction or high budget video.
Lorde is sixteen and already a household name in New Zealand. Universal has been backing her since she was 12 resulting in four years of strategy behind a product and artist that has the potential to be huge. You can also stream Lorde’s debut EP, The Love Club under the cut. Lorde’s debut album is set for release in September.

Listen: I Am A Camera – The Legendary Children
Published June 28, 2013Still one of electro-pop’s best kept secrets, I Am A Camera (British duo consisting of Ian Watt and Francesca Ross) has unveiled their latest offering since their recent buzz track (and notably darker) cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ 1987 hit ‘Rent’ and their official remix of Lana’s Born To Die (listen under the cut).
“The Legendary Children” has an inspiring 80s-esque feel with standout lyrics like “devotional sinners we will be” – it’s a track about being you (but not in a cliche Katy Perry/Jessie J pop kinda way), in their own words “a hymn to everyone out there doing it for themselves”.
The band is set to unveil a music video with creative nodes to Spring Breakers, Dee-Lite, Pedro Almodovar and Roy Lichtenstein. “The Legendary Children” is released on digital Sunday August 25th on Tim and Danny Music.
