The last time that we featured Grainville Train, they transformed rusty Americana into a celebration of freedom, identity and reinvention on the cinematic single, Cowboy Cadillac, so when we heard that the band was back with Sweet Freedom, our interest was piqued and we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Sweet Freedom opens with a timeless, strummed guitar energy featuring textured drums, expanding with a sublime electric guitar. We experience the lyrics, “Show me your blue skies, take me away, just wanna have a good time, that’s what they say, and baby, you look so fine, when you’re in my arms, come on and stay…”
The track evolves with more emotive chords leading us through to the main concept of the song: freedom and liberation. In a sense, the message feels super important, delivered at a time when we, as a society, need it the most. Living in the moment and making the most of today might seem like a simple concept, but with the state of reality around us, it feels truly apt, zeitgeist and a dose of what we all need.
The ethereal vocals before an instrumental solo are transcendental, as we are invited to reflect on the overarching meaning of the song before the hook returns like a mantra for the finale. There is something very freeing about this moment.

For sync placements, we can imagine Sweet Freedom featuring in a film like the Oscar-winning One Battle After Another, Almost Famous, Into the Wild, Thelma & Louise, Wild, The Way Way Back and A Good Year. It would also work well in a series like Daisy Jones & The Six, Friday Night Lights, Virgin River, Outer Range or Somebody Somewhere. Fans of Tom Petty, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bryan Adams and The War on Drugs would find something to vibe with on Sweet Freedom.
Formed in Jyväskylä, Finland, in 2008, Grainville Train is a five-piece band bringing together classic country rock, melodic rock and Americana. After 18 years of playing live across Finland, they are now preparing to take their music further afield. Sweet Freedom serves as the third and final single ahead of their forthcoming debut album, planned for early 2027.
We continue to be obsessed, and have added Sweet Freedom to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Grainville Train and anticipate future releases from the band.
