Our obsession with Exzenya seems to grow with every listen. We last featured the rising star as she took us from vulnerability to triumph with stripped-back and emotive single, The Fans Applauded, so when we found out that Exzenya was back with the provocatively titled, B!tch Please, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
B!tch Please opens with a brooding and dramatic bass guitar performance with textured drums and cymbal details as Exzenya shares the subversive and assertive lyrics, “You thought sleeping with a married man would bring you happiness, you’ll see you thought you were getting a sugar daddy, take a good hard look at me, you’ll never be me, you thought you could live my life and be me, so, by now you see that you released me, I’m the one with the money, bitch please, you set me free…”
In essence, the song is about Exzenya confronting the woman who had an affair with her husband. Exzenya is saying that, although the other woman thought sleeping with a married man would give her a better life through money, and eventually the husband himself, the affair actually set Exzenya free from an unfaithful man.
It’s really cleverly written, and performed with Exzenya‘s signature grit and edge. Exzenya flips the script and tells the woman that the husband will eventually cheat on her too, because his behaviour shows that he cannot be trusted or changed. It’s all about liberation and accepting fate in the best and most positive light that we can.
We love how empowering and badass the track is and it makes sense that Exzenya digs her heels into roots rock territory for this one. There is no doubt that B!tch Please has a cinematic allure too and we could imagine this track featuring in a scene from Promising Young Woman, Gone Girl or even an episode of Big Little Lies. Freedom is revenge after all!
Fans of Dorothy, Kaleo, Barns Courtney, Grandson and ZZ Ward would be able to vibe with what Exzenya has created here, but there is still something distinctly personal about her approach. Needless to say, we are absolutely here for it and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and TRIPPY playlist!
