Establishing the mood with an intricate, acoustic guitar soundscape expanding with textured drums, bass and a cosmic blues harp, Clayton Bellamy opens I Miss Tom Petty with a high emotional quotient and the lyrics, “Wish I could turn back time like an old cassette rewinds with a toothmark pencil…”
We immediately connect with the poetic prowess and visual universe that Clayton is building with his prose. In essence, the song is about nostalgia and the feeling of missing a simpler, younger time in life. Clayton shares his physical world memories like old cars, payphones, cassettes, campfires, CDs, and of course, someone he once loved.
In a super relatable way, he realizes that all of these things and moments have changed or disappeared. The concept of Tom Petty represents more than just the musician, but more so the soundtrack to that period of his life, with references to his songs like Free Fallin‘ and I Won’t Back Down. The lyric, “Time moves on but I guess I ain’t ready…” is a pretty good summary of the heart of the song. Clayton explains, “I didn’t just miss Tom Petty – I missed what his music made me feel”.

There is no doubt that I Miss Tom Petty holds a cinematic allure. We could imagine it in a movie like The Holdovers, or the Oscar-winning, One Battle After Another. It would also feel right at home in Bad Grandpa, or Everybody Wants Some!!.
The release also marks an exciting new chapter for the JUNO Award-winning artist. After more than two decades as one of the defining voices in Canadian country rock, including his work with multi-platinum band The Road Hammers, Clayton is returning with Soft Kind of Loud, his first solo album in over a decade. We learn that the song was co-written with Dan Davidson and Tim Hicks, and the track also has a personal connection to Clayton’s acclaimed live production, The Legendary Life of Tom Petty, a multimedia concert experience celebrating the musician’s songs and legacy.
Needless to say, we are deeply moved by I Miss Tom Petty, and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Clayton Bellamy‘s wider discography, including Racing on the Wind, and Heart With Strings.
