The last time that we featured Grim Logick was when he explored addiction, survival, and self-awareness on Trauma Pit (Call The Bluff), so when we heard that Grim was back as a feature on Odds Got Me by MaTT DoDD, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Odds Got Me opens with an ethereal and melodic guitar soundscape that crescendos into cerebral atmospheric ad-libs featuring the title of the track. The first verse is delivered by MaTT DoDD as he raps, “Yo, odds got me beat a million to one, but that don’t mean that I ain’t the one, don’t give a fuck which band you rock, ain’t gonna stop ’til I’m on the top…”
In essence, the track is about facing difficult situations, being underestimated, yet still refusing to give up. MaTT DoDD shares the analogy of the odds being stacked against him but how he stays real, working towards the top, and ignoring the people who pretend to be great without putting in the effort.
We appreciate the subversive vocal design that embodies notions of glitch-rap that feels highly contemporary even though the main body of the soundscape holds a 90s nostalgia at the same time. Grim Logick shares his personal struggles, mistakes, and difficult past on the chorus and cements his resilience and how he is building a better version of himself. He also talks about wanting to succeed for his daughters and leave something meaningful behind. This is something that we have previously experienced within the narrative of his artistry.
Overall, the song has a strong message of self-belief, growth, and determination at a time when many of us need to hear this. Basically, the song says that even when life pushes us to the edge, we can keep fighting, learn from our problems, and never let weakness or other people’s opinions stop us.
For some context, MaTT DoDD is an independent underground hip-hop artist based in Havana, Florida, and has spent more than a decade building his music career. It is clear that he is a determined artist who refuses to let his physical challenges of muscular dystrophy or the difficulties of the music industry stop him.
We learn that he has also built strong connections with other independent artists and the 3NIGMA BRED MUSIC, and that he has already released a 23-track project FULL FORCE. Odds Got Me is an advance track from his upcoming sophomore album, FULL FORCE 2 which serves as a record built around one idea: overwhelming odds do not get to determine the outcome.
MaTT DoDD produced and wrote the track with Grim Logick as featured artist, songwriter, and executive producer, whilst Dylan Droll handled the final mastering as a longtime creative associate of Grim Logick. Odds Got Me holds an undeniable cinematic allure, and we could imagine the track being featured in a film like the recent Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another, or an episode of Beauty in Black on Netflix.
The most brilliant and authentic element of the track is that Matt acknowledges that the odds really are stacked against him whilst refusing to let probability determine outcome. Grim takes the idea further, reframing problems, habits and past mistakes to build a better version of himself. What makes the collaboration particularly effective is that the two artists aren’t telling exactly the same story, but both arrive at the same conclusion.
