We previously featured Andrei British for bringing to life retro-futuristic charm with a playful space-age jazz edge on Alien Jazz Girl, so when we heard that Andrei was back with Distant Moon Cantina, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his creative universe once more.
Distant Moon Cantina opens with a guitar riff, melodic keys, astral saxophone and cosmic electric nuances as we experience seductive, situational prose painting a vivid image of a futuristic place and Andrei’s sublime muse. The lyrics are laced with poetic prowess and create a cinematic world where we feel aligned with Andrei’s every emotion.
We could imagine Distant Moon Cantina being featured in a movie like Men In Black, or Serenity, and we also learn that it was inspired by Star Wars. It would also be a great fit for Guardians of the Galaxy, particularly during a scene where the characters find themselves in an intergalactic watering hole surrounded by mythical creatures, neon lights and somewhat questionable decisions.
There is something wonderfully theatrical about the way Andrei constructs this universe. Distant Moon Cantina feels like an invitation to step inside another dimension. We appreciate the way classic jazz sensibilities collide with futuristic sound design, creating a smoky, seductive and slightly rebellious atmosphere.
There is also a fascinating vocal quality to the composition that reminds us of Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty, particularly when combined with the melodic Latin-rock sensibility associated with Santana. That fusion gives Distant Moon Cantina a surprisingly warm and human centre beneath all of the cosmic detailing.
We love how Distant Moon Cantina feels both nostalgic and futuristic. It taps into the timeless fantasy of disappearing into a bar somewhere far beyond Earth, where dreamers, outsiders and renegades can forget about the world. In that sense, this feels super zeitgeist and taps into a sentiment that we all share at present.
