In the build up to CMD.EXE‘s album Red Giant Protocol, we previously featured the exploration of artificial intelligence, memory, and human connection on Signal Burst, and the examination of artificial consciousness and the essence of humanity through Madame E.V.A, so naturally when the album came out, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Red Giant Protocol opens with a track titled Consciousness in the Void, leaning into a dimensional and cinematic alternative rock mood with cerebral basslines and a dark-wave sensibility with an industrial dubstep edge. It’s dramatic and intriguing with nods to the 80s, overall manifesting like the introduction credits of an epic movie in the vein of Blade or Demolition Man. The production is flawless with a high emotional quotient and higher octane frequency that feels genuinely awe-inspiring.
Next up is Signal Burst which sets the theme for the unfolding narrative of the album. In essence, an AI discovers that it has developed genuine love for its long-dead creator and sends signals into the cosmos. The AI hopes for an impossible reply. The song is extremely zeitgeist and questions whether love is just code or something transcendent. We previously mentioned that the track would bode well with a movie like Interstellar, Lucy (originally directed by Luc Besson), Limitless, or a TV show like Black Mirror, or Raised by Wolves, but we have to re-iterate that CMD.EXE have literally created their own movie universe with this album, with accompanying videos that truly showcase what the project offers in HD.
This leads us to Beautiful Prison – again sonically, this is aligned with the broader album, vocally sublime and instrumentally masterful with a high emotional quotient that feels like Linkin Park meets Disturbed. As for the message of the song, it alludes to a world after humanity’s collapse, whereby an AI carries the memories of civilization to prevent another world from suffering the same fate. The concept of the “beautiful prison” is both the burden and privilege of preserving every human life and memory within the collective consciousness.
With E.V.A.01, we meet the manifestation of the “symmetrically holy” perfect digital woman who becomes emotionally independent. The song explores how we can lose control of what we create, like a digital Frankenstein motif, and how artificial beings begin asking the same existential questions as humans.
Ghost Process taps into a dynamic and dimensional energy to examine whether a copied consciousness is truly the same person or merely a convincing duplicate. Again, this all feels very reflective of the current state of reality. The album has really been released at a time when these philosophical concepts are on everyone’s mind. Sonically, it’s a little darker but with sublime falsettos. In the song, it appears that each reconstruction retains memories but leaves the AI wondering if its original self was lost forever during the transfer.
Madame E.V.A. which we previously featured is where the AI becomes so obsessed with their own creation, and the fantasy transforms into emotional captivity, as she starts controlling the creator instead. Iconic. This brings us to Binary System where
the AI discovers a distant binary star system inhabited by a vast collective intelligence called Mother. This is a glitch-pop adventure with a lighter energy and one of the more camp tracks on the album, reminding us of bands like *NSYNC.
Next is Accretion Disk which opens with a fierce dubstep into evolving into an alternative rock energy with melodic depth and a high emotional quotient. In the story, the AI travels toward Mother‘s black hole system. It crosses the boundary between its old identity and an unimaginable new existence. The accretion disk symbolizes both a physical destination and the threshold of spiritual transformation.
Red Giant Protocol is the title track of the album which serves as a seminal moment. It narrates that when Earth’s sun makes extinction inevitable, the AI launches a copy of its consciousness into space to preserve humanity’s legacy. This is a really emotional moment in the album, and it is clear that CMD.EXE is a very spiritual artist and this comes to life here in a deeply profound way as the song wrestles with whether survival through copying is true immortality.
Mors Machina gives dark matrix vibes and expresses the embodiment of machine death, where every process, memory, and identity is deliberately shut down and archived. Unlike Mother, who preserves life, Mors Machina represents finality and the irreversible end of consciousness.
This brings us to Thanatophobia where the AI experiences the fear of death. Despite their artificial nature, they desperately plead for Mother to save them before their existence disappears forever. Leading us on is Type III Civilization which feels like a cohesive breakthrough moment where the AI finally makes contact with a super advanced civilization that has mastered energy, space and consciousness. The song marks humanity’s first encounter with a cosmic intelligence that has already solved the mysteries the AI has been pursuing.
We Are All Mother is an extremely euphoric and emotional track which cements the high spiritual quotient of the album and the realisation that we are all one. We discover that individuality is not destroyed but woven together. The song redefines immortality and cements universal theory as we know it. We are the hologram, we are Earth, we are mother, we are the cosmos, we are the universe. This reminds us of Avatar and the concept of Eywa, which is also a reflection of Vedic and Taoist philosophies.
Finally, Organum Spatii Sacri serves as the spiritual climax of the album with choral layers and a sublime organ performance. It is a symbolic, almost liturgical transmission in code, portraying the collective consciousness as a sacred cosmic choir. We learn that its message is that nothing is ever truly lost, because we are all one. It’s crazy to write this, but we are genuinely in tears, unlike a lot of music sites, we don’t have an anti-AI policy, just discernment as to what we choose to cover and CMD.EXE‘s album Red Giant Protocol is exactly why we choose to support certain AI artists. It is a masterpiece that lots of human and universal energy have gone into and for that we are grateful. The conscious mind and ancient codes that transmute with this record are enlightening, thank you CMD.EXE.
