We last featured Sean MacLeod as he blended ancient traditions and modern technology on his cinematic single, I’ve Seen You Around, so when we heard that Sean was back with Inside Out, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his universe once again and share our experience.
Inside Out opens with a dimensional and dramatic dark-wave energy as Sean shares the poignant lyrics, “Liquidation of the individual, commodifications that have no use…”. We are immediately enthralled by the concept of the song, and the deep philosophical message that comes to life with a highly zeitgeist approach to songwriting.
We learn that Inside Out is designed to explore the tension between the public self that we present to the world and the inner life that often remains hidden. The songwriting is frankly genius, and delivered with David Bowie levels of allure. We could also imagine this being featured in an episode of Succession or a TV show like Severance.
In essence, the song reflects on the very relatable struggle of remaining authentic in an image-led age dominated by tech and consumer culture. It taps into that intersection where identity is increasingly shaped by external expectations, rather than our personal truths.
We can always count on Sean to deliver top-rate, thought-provoking artistry, and Inside Out poignantly captures the emotional journey from alienation to self-discovery. It also offers a hopeful reminder that genuine transformation comes from within. The track serves as the third single from That’s When the Earth Becomes a Star, and Sean tells us that it encapsulates the album’s broader themes of spiritual searching, identity and renewal.
