We previously featured Vase for exploring spiritual ascension on the hypnotic and psychedelic track, LIMINAL PHASE, Pt.1, so naturally, when we heard that Liminal Phase, Pt.2 had dropped, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Liminal Phase, Pt.2 opens with a rising, boundless bass synth with hypnotic notions and a textured topper. A cosmic, warbling synth guides us in a more melodic direction. We appreciate the high octane and energetic vibe, perfect for a rocket yoga class.
The composition is dynamic and dimensional with cerebral motifs that keep us enthralled and alive. The build is subtle and leads through to a more trippy energy, almost submersed in water. The ebbs and flows are sublime and possess our very spirit.
Speaking on the release, Vase Hagakure-13 tells us, “The second and final installment of the Liminal Phase collection of tracks, exploring Rudolph Otto’s concept of Mysterium fascinosum (the allurement); in his exploration of tribal dance/tribal ecstasy. I reprise this concept in this techno production.”
He adds, “My background is from DJing in the underground warehouse scene, in east London ( circa 90’s – early 2000’s). I am also a classically trained musician and love modal melodies/harmonies and jazz chord progressions.”
The emergence of an almost tropical high synth mid-way through the opus is welcome progression and has us feeling euphoric, as intended by the composer. We appreciate the way it pans and manifests with a sense of ancient-futurism.
On the production process, Vase adds, “The track was mastered by engineer Jesse Skeens (Medway Studios), who helped to create the feeling of a vinyl track being played in a warehouse, with turntable brake effect and spin-back. The track was produced with both analogue and digital effects, in the recording.”
This touch is pure genius, and reminds us of how Dummy by Portishead was produced. We could certainly imagine this being featured in a set in the Steam Room at UNFOLD in London. The melodic synths subtly change expressions with compression and reverb and this lasts until the very final moments of the track creating a spacey and otherworldly energy.
