Drawing us in with a glistening soundscape with the iconic original melody of the song, Signate opens their cover of Another Day In Paradise, originally by Phil Collins, with dimensionality and a high emotional quotient.
The opus expands with textured vocals paying homage to the original energy of the track, but with a more uplifting twist. For some context, the situational opening lyrics are, “She calls out to the man on the street, ‘sir, can you help me? It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep Is there somewhere you can tell me?’, he walks on, doesn’t look back, he pretends he can’t hear her, starts to whistle as he crosses the street, seems embarrassed to be there…”
In essence, the song details the concept of human disconnection and how we can live in two different worlds at the same time. Originally released in 1989, it is about the way society ignores people suffering on the streets.
The hook showcases the disparity of privilege and how it can create a distance between “our paradise” and someone else’s struggle to survive. It serves as a protest track and call for empathy. We are grateful to Signate for bringing the song back to life in 2026, as the song feels painfully relevant with the current housing crises, rising living costs and social inequality. Today, around 318 million people globally are estimated to be homeless.
The sonic interlude is sublime and a euphoric, climactic moment in the track with a re-imagined bridge with a different melody before a reprise into the familiar energy of the original. The instrumental outro leaves us yearning for more and truly exemplifies how masterful Signate‘s artistry truly is.
There is no doubt that the cover would be a great fit for a film or TV show like The Pursuit of Happyness, Nomadland or Shameless. We learn that Signate is the collaborative project of Augusta, GA-based longtime friends Scott and JR.
Speaking on the release, Scott candidly confesses, “JR and I have been friends and musical collaborators since we met over 20 years ago. This particular cover of Phil Collins‘ classic was something we worked on over a decade ago, but it just didn’t come together in a way that felt satisfying to either of us. Now that I am older and have young kids, I find less time and moments of stillness to be creative. So, it was in desperation that I started digging through our back catalog to work with. Brushing up a half-baked idea seemed easier than starting from nothing. Luckily, the new attempt at the song resulted in something that both honored the original but added just enough of our creative input to justify its existence.”
