We previously featured Deja Renee when she took us on a cosmic spiral through heartbreak, anxiety and self-discovery with her single, Falling (Lose My Mind), so when we heard that the star was back with Close, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in her universe once again.
Establishing the mood with an ethereal, layered synthscape, Deja Renee opens Close with a cosmic energy and luscious vocals as she sings, “I didn’t want to fall for you this way, the way that you’re moving got me in a daze… You say the word I lose my mind, convince myself, what′s the point of runnin’ round and, only for the night, make you lose your breath, you keep holding on…”
We immediately connect with the dimensionality of the track and Deja Renee‘s sublime delivery. Her poetic prowess is tangible, and her philosophical, self-realized, introspective depth really shines through.
Fans of Ariana Grande, Kelela, Doja Cat, and SZA will absolutely be able to connect with what Deja Renee is creating, and we love how catchy the hooks are. Essentially, Close is about two people who are caught in a powerful mutual attraction that neither can fully resist or commit to.
The lyrics describe an on-again, off-again dynamic which is super relatable. We could imagine this in an episode of Euphoria with Nate and Cassie, where both keep drawing closer despite trying to maintain distance.

There is a sense of emotional and physical chemistry that leaves the pair feeling captivated, almost addicted, as they question whether pursuing the relationship is the right choice. It’s actually brilliant songwriting, and we learn that it was written by Deja Renee herself alongside Sade Frame, A1 Krashn, and Fausto Diaz.
For some background, Deja has training in classical voice and jazz, and earned her Associate of Arts in Music Performance from MiraCosta College, which absolutely manifests in and explains her rare technical precision and versatility as an artist.
Needless to say, we continue to be in awe of Deja Renee‘s work, and have added Close to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the exquisite, growing discography of Deja Renee, and anticipate future releases.
