Drawing us in with a cosmic synth and intricate guitar performance, Deja Renee opens Falling (Lose My Mind) with a captivating timbre as she shares the lyrics, “Slipping from reality, goin’ backwards, running from the way I feel, I’m too scared if I let it flow, it’ll swallow me, but I don’t wanna fight it, don’t wanna fight it…”
We immediately connect with Deja Renee‘s poetic prowess and the philosophical yet self-realized depth of Falling (Lose My Mind). In essence, the song expresses the emotional struggle of being trapped between reality and Deja’s own overwhelming thoughts.
It’s relatable, as we all know how fear, anxiety, and emotional confusion can consume our minds. The lyrics show that Deja is avoiding her true feelings because she might be afraid that if she fully faces them, the emotions could “swallow” her.
We appreciate how Deja reflects on loneliness, heartbreak, and misinterpreting someone that she cared about. This feels especially zeitgeist in an age where so many of us are divided. Deja realizes how she built false images and expectations, and this observation from her feels cathartic.
Speaking on the story of the song, Deja says, “It was kind of about recently being broken up from a long term relationship, and now figuring out how to navigate my new life and figuring out who I am. It’s about spiraling between vulnerability and full self control. And the tension between wanting to fully let go and let be, but also being afraid of what will happen if I do.”
She taps into notions of escapism where she feels temporarily free, euphoric, like “flying outta space”, and this feels more aligned to where Deja deserves to be. We love the ethereal production designs that reflect the mood of the track. The intimacy of the production is sublime, as are Deja’s harmonies and ad-libs. The detail results in a super-dimensional feel, coupled with the switch-ups of her flow.

On the collaborative process of the song, Deja tells us, “I was reached out to on instagram by Olivier Bassil. He is the main producer for this song. He brought in song writers Sade Frame, A1 Krashn, and Destiny Petrel, and we recorded this song in his studio in LA. Sade Frame wrote most of the topline, with some help from A1 Krashn. Destiny Petrel wrote most of the lyrics, with Sade, A1, and my help of course. A1, Destiny, and I wrote the background vocals. Olivier Bassil played the electric guitar for the intro, and the bass guitar in the post hook. Destiny helped him finalize the notes for the bass guitar part.”
We could imagine this being featured in an episode of Euphoria on HBO, or a TV show like Elite or Knokke Off on Netflix. Fans of Doja Cat and Kali Uchis would absolutely be able to connect with what Deja Renee has created, though speaking on her influences, she confesses, “[It is] Ariana Grande and Tate McRae inspired. Mostly Ariana Grande inspiration in the cadence of the background vocals, and the a cappella ending.”
Needless to say, we love the output, and have added Falling (Lose My Mind) to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Deja Renee, including Take Me Home Tonight, and Fantasy.
