Our literal obsession with Anna Thoresen grows with every listen. We last featured Anna for sharing her fierce and self-created energy with the assertive opus, DIRTY LAUNDRY, so naturally, we needed to express our every emotion with regard to her latest release, GROUNDHOG DAY.
GROUNDHOG DAY opens with a shimmering intro and textured 80s drum riff as Anna croons, “I’ve been here before, I know how this goes, thought I knew better, now I’m not sure, I don’t know who you are anymore…”
There’s a trip-hop, alternative rock, and grunge vibe that comes to life. The cerebral vocal harmonies and wind chime glockenspiel sounds are sublime. We love the introspective depth and the raw authenticity that Anna channels with her vocals.
The track would be perfect for a scene in a TV show like Sirens or a thought-provoking scene in Euphoria on HBO. Lyrics like “I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but I just feel so stuck…” remind us of early Zero 7 (with Sia), Portishead, and Morcheeba.
GROUNDHOG DAY is extremely hypnotic, aligned with the artwork and video for the track, and of course the concept of the song itself – about looping, spinning out, and blending days. Speaking on the inspiration, Anna says, “I moved to LA and was super lonely and depressed, and I kept noticing all of these patterns that kept repeating in my life in work or relationships where things just weren’t working out for me. I was so sad about it, so I wrote what I consider my “death march”, GROUNDHOG DAY.”
Anna adds, “This song is two years old now and it’s very special and important to me. The music video I just released for it is an incredible short film directed by Sebastian Johnson-Deal that explores the idea of living in a time portal of your own misery and work/life balance in a bright, edgy, and maximalist way.”
The video is an artistic masterpiece created by Sebastian Johnson-Deal with stop motion and miniature design by Daniel Sosa Cobo. You could watch it a hundred times and notice new little details every single time. Yes, that is an invitation!
Fans will be glad to know that Anna has shows coming up at two prestigious Los Angeles venues, namely Harvard & Stone on June 30th and The Viper Room on July 16th. In the meantime, we have added GROUNDHOG DAY to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Anna’s exquisite, growing discography.
