For the last few months, we have featured a slew of Eye of TJ‘s releases, so when we heard that the artist had just launched his EP, Knowing the Risk, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his five-track opus and share our experience.
Knowing the Risk opens with Backroad Serenade, which features an intimate electric guitar energy and extremely poetic prose as TJ shares vivid situational lyrics with his signature introspective energy. This song is about finding solace and emotional release through a solitary drive down rural back roads.
TJ invites us to escape the pressures, worries and memories that weigh on us by immersing us in nature, music, and the quiet rhythm of the journey. The gravel roads, fading sunlight, pine trees, wind, and stars create a peaceful setting. As night falls, the drive becomes almost therapeutic. This allows TJ to reconnect with himself – something we learn is a full circle theme of this record.
Next up is Headlights in the Drive, which opens with a meditative riser and a dimensional electric guitar performance. Eye of TJ shares the situational lyrics, “It’s a Friday night, me and some friends just killing time, cold beers sweating in our hands, hanging by the poolside under the porch light, nothing playing but old country songs, laughing loud yeah everything’s fine, but I smile, but it don’t last long, cos something is missing when the sun goes down…”
Eye of TJ previously told us, “This track is about the quiet hours after the Friday night lights fade. It’s about the moments where absence feels louder than the music, and the beer isn’t strong enough to leave the memory behind.”
TJ says, “Headlights in the Drive perfectly summarizes the EP’s core themes: the late-night ache of absence, small-town heartbreak, and the restless push and pull of trying to have fun with friends while secretly wishing for a specific person to pull into the driveway.”
This brings us to the title track of the project, featuring a rising astral guitar soundscape, exploding into a timeless alternative rock energy. The lyrics tap into introspective, metaphorical themes about self-realization before TJ is met with a human connection. Just when he thought he was on his way out, he falls for his muse, lets his guard down and expresses his turmoil at being on the edge of life.

We love the production; it is timeless, and full of emotion. The sound that Eye of TJ manifests is stadium-ready, and certainly sync placement ready. It has a 2000s vibe that would be perfect for the soundtrack of a show like Smallville or Roswell. We deeply connect with the poetic prowess, lyrics like “hearts don’t break, they just bend…” are exquisite, and the emotion that is conveyed feels deeply human. Fans of 30 Seconds To Mars would absolutely love this. It makes sense that it is the centre-piece of the EP. We have to note the interconnectedness, not only sonically, but lyrically too as Knowing the Risk includes a “headlights” reference.
Next up is Nothing Lasts Forever, which opens with a more brooding timbre and personal storytelling. The visual lyrics come to life in a cinematic way and overall, the story taps into a tale as old as time – a relationship that didn’t quite work out. What is great about Eye of TJ is that through stories of human connection, he shares wisdom and a lived experience that we can all learn from. Naturally, the sound is consistent, and the detail of the production is really intricate. The guitar solo moments, albeit brief, are transcendental.
Finally, we experience Back To Me, which opens with a more stripped-back energy and a message of self-realization and self-worth. TJ can finally breathe, he is liberated and at one with himself. We love this full circle moment. “This isn’t heartbreak, this is the key to getting back to me…”, shares Eye of TJ. We feel the catharsis come through the speakers and appreciate the raw vulnerability that the star shares with his universe.
We have added Knowing the Risk to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Eye of TJ‘s exquisite growing discography, and anticipate future releases from the emotive creator!
