Establishing the mood with a dial tone, a cerebral percussion motif and atmospheric vocals expanding into a shimmering synthscape, Even In Darkness opens On Hold with dimensionality and cinematic allure.
The opus expands with psychedelic notions and an introspective theme as Even In Darkness grapples with the concept of being left in emotional limbo. We can really relate to the themes of waiting, tension, uncertainty, and sense of being suspended.
As much as the song can be interpreted on a literal and interpersonal level, it feels like there is more at play here. It serves as a societal commentary on ambition and human connection which feels highly tapped into the zeitgeist.
The metaphor of being “on hold” resonates deeply and we connect with how it reflects the disorienting space between expectation and outcome, when resolution feels out of reach. There is no doubt that the track would be perfect for a sync placement in a trippy and psychedelic TV show like Nine Perfect Strangers, or even an episode of Euphoria on HBO.

It would also fit well in a Sofia Coppola or Luca Guadagnino production. Fans of Sufjan Stevens and Frank Ocean will also be able to vibe with On Hold.
As for the production, it is sublime. It blends vintage synthesizers, modulated guitars, a hypnotic Höfner bassline with crisp drums, and of course, Even In Darkness‘s ethereal vocals. Written, produced, mixed, and mastered entirely by Even In Darkness, the song is designed to prioritise atmosphere and emotional progression over conventional pop structure.
Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added On Hold to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Even In Darkness, including My Mind Lost, and TWO FACED.
