Establishing the mood with an astral melodic synth riff, expanding into textured reggae drums and a warm frequency, Ma-isheeba opens DUTCH POT with an invitation to explore what she is creating. For some background, a “dutch pot” also known as a “dutchie” is a heavy, thick-walled cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid, traditionally made of seasoned cast iron, particularly popular for Caribbean curries and stews due to its superior heat retention.
We love the visual universe that Ma-isheeba creates as she sings, “I’ll cook a wicked stew for you, in my dutch pot…” The concept of the song feels wholesome and grounded, tapping into the virtuous root chakra necessities that connect us as a species.
“Nourishment is what you need from the dutch pot…” sings Ma-isheeba seductively as she turns up the heat, creating her finger licking, satisfaction-guaranteed cooking. Naturally, there seems to be a level of innuendo here, which we also appreciate from a root chakra standpoint!
The production is brilliant, the cerebral transition just before the second verse taps into notions of Afro-futurism. Ma-isheeba‘s flow is sublime, and her timbre switch-up showcasing her versatility keeps us enthralled before a charismatic fade out for the finale, leaving us yearning for more. We could imagine DUTCH POT being performed in a forest setting at Medicine Festival or Secret Garden Party, or perhaps playing at a restaurant like Jam Delish.

Speaking on the release, Ma-isheeba confesses, “My music is about remembering who we are – through sound, through feeling, through connection to our roots and to each other.” We learn that DUTCH POT was produced in collaboration with veteran producer and musician Mike McEvoy (Soul2Soul, Steve Winwood, Mark Morrison, John Reid, Lalomie Washburn).
Ma-isheeba is an acclaimed vocalist and holistic practitioner whose vibrant sound blends reggae, funk, soul, and unmistakable Jamaican flavour into music. This really transmutes cohesively with the release of DUTCH POT which holds traditional values with a conscious and sensual twist.
Formerly known as Chyna Whyne and with a career spanning over three decades, Ma-isheeba has toured with legends including Eric Clapton, Seal, and The Who, whilst contributing backing vocals to iconic recordings by Peter Gabriel and Rick Astley.
We love what she is cooking up with DUTCH POT, and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Ma-isheeba! You can learn more about Ma-isheeba’s holistic work and wellness retreats here.
