We have been intently following the rollout of Drew Williams‘ album, It’s My Turn, and previously featured his sublime ode honouring the female of the species, She’s a Super Woman, and his emotive and personal debut single, On This Day, so when we heard that the album was out in full, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in the full experience and share our thoughts.
It’s My Turn poignantly opens with On This Day, which serves as a deeply emotional and cinematic R&B ballad. The song blends Drew’s pristine, atmospheric vocals with delicate piano to create a timeless, 90s-inspired sound. The song was originally written for his sister’s wedding, and captures themes of growth, reflection and notions of enduring love.
Next up is Run It Back, which opens with R&B vocalizations and a more cerebral pop edge that fans of Usher will be able to connect with. We love the dance-floor friendly vibes and the seductive nature of the track. The production has a dimensionality and celebrates music and freedom, truly showcasing Drew’s incredible, high-octane flow.
This brings us to She’s a Super Woman which is an empowering and uplifting song that celebrates the strength, ambition and independence of a self-made woman. Drew really showcases his vivid storytelling here and we learn the song was inspired by an idea from his father, caring both personal meaning and a broader sentimental message of appreciation.
Ecstasy For Eternity opens with a sublime guitar riff and an ad-lib of the words, “Turn the light down low… you know what time it is…”. This is followed by a sultry and romantic performance about human connection. Drew really showcases his vocal range here. It’s brilliantly produced and perfect for a sexy scene in a show like the Netflix show, Beauty in Black.
Next is Beat Like This, which opens with a vibrant synth and a pop-friendly flow with intricate delivery. We love the poetic depth and the timeless concept of the song. This could be a NSYNC song, but obviously with Drew’s own unique imprint.
This Life and The Next has a slower BPM, unveiling itself as a ballad that Boyz II Men fans would absolutely love. There are loving and existential themes at play here, and we really love the authenticity that shines through. Lyrically it is beautiful, especially words like, “From the ancient times to the neon city lights…” The build of the track is epic and the final layered vocals are simply transcendental. Visually, this would be a great song to make a music video for.
This leads us to Let’s Go, which is a more funk-infused experience, again tapping into that Michael Jackson or Bruno Mars energy. It’s the perfect party song, and we love the visual descriptors and Drew’s brilliant narrative-driven storytelling.
Sweet Sentiments is another charming track, honouring the divine feminine with silky smooth vocals and a sensual touch. What we love about It’s My Turn, is how he has truly tapped into that exquisite 1990s and 2000s vibe, timeless perfection at its best!
That Touch is a more introspective song with delicate harmonies, once again reminding us of the importance of human connection. Fans of early Frank Ocean would love this. The final track is a bonus track called Spared to Save You, which opens with beautiful vocalizations and piano. This is really a chance for Drew to show off his vocal chops and ethereal vibes as he shares his most existential frequency with us. This really makes for the perfect end to the record – truly full of soul and depth.
We are super impressed by the album as a whole. It’s My Turn is a time-capsule, perfectly produced, cohesive from start to finish, and a family project, written by Drew Williams himself, with the support of his father, Andrew Williams, who wrote the songs, She’s a Super Woman and Beat Like This.
