Establishing the mood with a click and a tremolo synth, Lateral Root opens Sunlight with warmth and dimensionality. The composition expands into melodic clarity with a series of risers, and breathy vocalizations. We appreciate the dynamism and the meditative, futuristic energy that transmutes.
The looping notions are hypnotic, whilst sonic switch-ups take us on a journey of ebbs and flows with astral design and ethereal wonderment. The intricacy is sublime, as soft wood block 8-bit textures guide us into a more psychedelic realm.
The overarching sentiment feels consciously astute and like an intentional production to manifest a sense of overall well-being and healing. Sunlight indeed feels its title, expressive and dimensionality at its core, with sonically vibrancy and a warming energy. This would be perfect for a yoga class – perhaps a vinyasa or rocket flow, and also a magic mushroom or Ayahuasca trip.
We learn that behind the moniker of Lateral Root is multi-disciplinary artist Tom Quick. He confesses, “For me the track has a lovely combination of beautiful atmosphere and infectious groove. The project was born in lockdown which for me was a time of introspection and longing as I was separated from loved ones.”

Tom adds, “The track is inspired by the work of artists like Rival Consoles, Floating Points, Four Tet, Olafur Arnolds and Robag Wruhme. It has an atmospheric, cinematic sound which builds throughout creating an involving, ethereal sonic landscape.”
Needless to say, we are in awe, and also appreciate the minimalist breakdown which is refined, almost akin to a fade out, but detailed at every step, and includes new vocalizations, leaving us yearning for more.
We have added Sunlight to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Lateral Root!
