Establishing the mood with an immersive guitar soundscape, Omnesia opens Days and Nights with delicate, layered vocals and situational, yet metaphorical prose laced with poetic prowess and accompanied by an expanding, psychedelic rock adjacent energy. Needless to say, we are in awe.
The journey that we are taken on feels dynamic, with theatrical piano riffs, textured drums and a thought-provoking narrative. Speaking on the release, Omnesia confesses, “This song came from the feeling of loneliness and sadness when a loved one travels, coupled to anticipation, joy and happiness when they return.”
There is a cinematic allure that manifests, and we could imagine that fans of David Bowie, The Beach Boys, and The Postal Service would also be able to connect with the avant-garde and power-pop hybrid that manifests. It would also be perfect for a range of sync deals – perhaps a coming–of-age movie or TV show like My Life With the Walter Boys, or even a space travel film like Space Cadet. The instrumental work and sound design are masterful and evoke a high emotional quotient, in line with the concept of the lyricism.
Omnesia elaborates with reference to their sonic and visual universe, “All songs on this 17 track album were written hand in hand with storytelling video ideas. Our video evokes Mary Tyler Moore meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles in a nostalgic visual nod to how folks traveled in the past, a timeless look and feel.”
Overall, Days and Nights comes to life as an organic and warmly textured opus. The rich array of stacked vocal layers adds dimensionality and spiritual depth to the piece resulting in notions of nostalgia and futurism. We learn that they are all performed by Medella Kingston. The band details, “The use of brick walls for the live drum sound was important. This track was recorded as a band, with no click track and a complete take. Vocals were re-recorded and strings and synth added later but the primary guitars, bass, drums and keys were recorded in a continuous take. Everyone used headphones and direct outs to record so that we would not spill into the drum mics. That enabled us to re-amp the DI signals of the bass and guitar through amps later on in our own recording studio down the street.”
Omnesia is the collaboration of androgynous vocalist Medella Kingston and eclectic guitarist/producer M2. There is no doubt that together they create an auditory omakase where future-vintage rock, indie dance, electro-pop, nu-wave, and prog effortlessly find common ground. They say, “We love new wave and the music of the late 70’s and 80’s, the birth of MTV, the beginning of music videos and how so many radically different artists exploded across the scene and changed what songs sounded like.”
Naturally, we are in awe and have added Days and Nights to our New Music Spotlight playlist, our TIMELESS playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Omnesia, including World on Fire, and Beautifulike.
