We have been intently following the rise and evolution of mUmbo with their cinematic and vulnerable single, Swing My Hip, as they explored the human condition on Don’t Even Mind The Rain, and the evocative Rollin’ Over, so when we heard that they had also released Sky Is Blue, we couldn’t wait to listen and feed back!
A wild guitar and intricate percussion accompanies atmospheric vocals and blues nuances as the band shares metaphorical prose, sung by Emma Semple, with a Southern yet global vibe. We are always in awe of mUmbo‘s soundscape and their sound design.
The piece feels meditative and expansive at the same time, taking us on a trip through time and space. We learn that Sky Is Blue is “a song about the human condition and the wider world – a desire to escape what holds us back and to reach for a blue sky with brand new starts and perspectives.”
We feel at one with the creators who showcase their dimensionality and depth with poetic prowess, a charismatic vocal timbre and intelligently crafted harmonies and playful, choral hooks.
The instrumental performances and masterful, and we deeply appreciate the overarching sentiment that the track holds, allowing us to connect with not only the artists, but ourselves and nature.
The band confess to showcase a “sonic palette ranging from ethereal, chilled soundscapes to guitar-driven modern blues-rock and psychedelic progressive rock”, they tell us that “one of the main aims of the song is to create a very dense sensory, vibey quality to connect directly with the listener”, and there is no doubt that Sky Is Blue does just that.
We have added the enigmatic composition to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the band from London’s wider discography!
