Setting the vibe with textured guitar licks, in a jazz meets soft rock hybrid frequency, mUmbo open their latest single, Swing My Hip with the introspective lyrics, “I’m cold and my feet are frozen, my shoes were not well chosen…”
As the songs, we experience an immersive journey of atmospheric vocals and refined production with a narrative alluding to the fragility of life, hopes and dreams and mistakes repeated.
The duo consists of Doug MacGowan on electric guitar and Emma Semple on beats and jazz-tinged vocals. Speaking on the track, mUmbo say, “Swing My Hip is a song that strikes a chord both on a personal level and also within the context or the wider world. It in effect takes a view from the bridge – where we are, were and what could be.
“There is a positive message too as it connects with the age-old human spirit that always cuts through the fog. Sonically the treatment of the layered guitars and vocals create a retro vibe”, continues the duo from London, UK, who have also released a retro cinematic visual for the song.
mUmbo cite influences including shoegaze, beats, folk, blues, rock and ambient and artists Stars of the Lid, Widowspeak, Mazzy Star, Goldfrapp, Little Feat and Ry Cooder, but it is also clear that they are creating a universe of their own.
Swing My Hip is mUmbo‘s second single this year, following the success of their debut album I Fly With Swallows.
We have added Swing My Hip to our New Music Spotlight playlist and have been exploring mUmbo‘s wider discography including Right Here On The Ground and Are These Halcyon Days?
