Establishing the mood with a vibrant, high octane ska-punk energy, Foolish Ambition and Marisa Calcagno open Traumtänzer with euphoric sentimentality and a captivating energy. The vocals are filled with pizazz and urgency as we are taken on a journey of youthful rebellion, playful expression and pure rock’n’roll abandon.
There is an immediate sense of freedom that comes to life with the song as the accordion takes centre stage, manifesting with quintessential European mainland energy whilst giving the track a wonderfully unexpected character.
The Ramones-inspired vibes brings us straight back to the raw spirit of early new wave. The track feels eccentric and underground but also hella festival-ready. For sure it is rooted in another era, but delivered with a fresh burst of energy. It’s exhilarating and chaotic in the best way.
As for the meaning of the song, it is about frustration with a naive, passive person who complains about the world but does nothing to change it. Foolish Ambition and Marisa Calcagno see this person as weak, lost in dreams, and full of empty ideals. They criticize their lack of action and courage, which actually feels pretty zeitgeist, and an important wake-up call – again a nod to the roots of the genre.
The prose shares how we want strength, passion, and conviction. They also feel no romantic attraction to this person because of this passive energy. Overall, the song expresses anger, disappointment, and contempt for the performative nature of people who talk about change but refuse to act.

For some background, there is an interesting story behind this release, too. Traumtänzer revisits Marisa Calcagno‘s original 1981 recording with Ti-Tho. It transforms the early synth-pop track into something much more fierce. The original cheeky spirit remains, but the arrangement takes a different direction.
We can imagine Traumtänzer finding a home in films such as 24 Hour Party People, The Runaways, Submarine, Sing Street, Human Traffic and Frank, or series like Deutschland 83, Vinyl, Sex Education, Derry Girls and The End of the F**ing World*. Fans of the Ramones, Blondie, The B-52s, Ideal and early Neue Deutsche Welle would find plenty to connect with here.
Needless to say, we appreciate the concept and the message, and have added Traumtänzer to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Foolish Ambition, including Alien Spaghetti Happy Happy Drug, and Going Into Nowhere.
