Drawing us in with delicate astral wind chime motifs, expanding with a breeze-like frequency into a textured drum-scape with vocals, Firefly Search Party open Take A Look with the situational prose, “The other day we were sat on the train, going on a little trip…”. This is punctured with sounds from a train station and an ad-lib of “come on” before we experience a melodic guitar performance leading us through to a thought-provoking message.
We love the high emotional quotient and the philosophical way the track captures the concept of everyday moments, turning them into something worth stopping for. There is a lovely sense of movement throughout the song with folk sensibilities sitting comfortably alongside cinematic pop hooks and indie experimentation.
Essentially, Take A Look is about paying attention. In this day and age, the world can feel smaller as routines take hold and our horizons narrow. That said, the duo are showing us that there is always something new to discover if we look a little closer. We connect with that optimistic and expansive reminder to stay curious. It is a simple idea, but one that feels pretty zeitgeist and delivered at a time when we, as a species, need it the most. Curiosity, awe and gratitude are not always easy to hold on to, and this song gives us a gentle nudge in their direction.

For sync placements, we could imagine the song featuring in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Paterson, Little Miss Sunshine, The Way Way Back, Begin Again and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. It would also suit a series like Adults, Detectorists, Somebody Somewhere, Ted Lasso, Joe Pera Talks with You and Trying. Fans of Belle and Sebastian, The Shins, The Paper Kites, and early Death Cab for Cutie would also be able to vibe with Take A Look.
Firefly Search Party describe themselves as “a quirky couple of humans” making honest music with friends, searching for connection, light and something beautiful to create together. Take A Look serves as the latest single from their forthcoming debut album, Prism of Dispositions.
We are intrigued to hear how the wider record develops this idea, and in the meantime, we have added Take A Look to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Firefly Search Party, including Sing Me A Song, and Some Days.
