Establishing the mood with choral vocals with a high spiritual quotient, expanding with rolling tabla and toms with ancient bol (vocal percussion) sounds, cinematic strings and astral flutes, Matreya and Lee Harris open Truth with dimensionality and an ancient energy.
We experience the lyrics, “When the future has no name, running from a past I’ve made, bloody war has swept this land and the king has lost his crown, drag me through the mud once more, make me into your consort, strip me back until I’m raw…” as we are taken on a journey of desperation, healing and ultimately hope, with Matreya‘s vocals feeling almost like a conversation with the universe.
What makes this collaboration particularly fascinating is the unlikely meeting of two Birmingham-born artists. We learn that the pair have travelled very different paths. Matreya (who we previously featured for his conscious mantra of unity and empowering spiritual anthem, Be Love), formerly known as Mason Noise, has reinvented himself through healing and spirituality. Lee Harris has become a globally recognised channeller, author and musician.
We love the way Lee Harris‘s spoken contribution acts almost as an answer to Matreya‘s questioning. The central idea of “Can you see the future we are building here and now?” shifts the track from darkness towards possibility, and the production follows that emotional movement beautifully. The music video, directed by Kai Ohio and The Samsara Collective, is out of this world. It is set by the beach where Matreya performs existentially in the sand, greeted by the universe, whilst Lee shares his prose with conviction. His fans are going wild for his presence on the track in the YouTube comments too.
Created with composer and producer Davor Bozic, the track has a wonderfully expansive quality. Native flutes, deep bass, electric guitars and orchestral textures move around a rolling 3/4 rhythm influenced by Pakistani qawwali, creating something that feels both ancient and futuristic. We’d love to experience this live at Medicine Festival or Soul Revolution.
There is also a cinematic quality here that immediately caught our attention. The accompanying video, unfolding across sunlit dunes and an open shoreline, extends that feeling of searching for clarity and gives the song an almost spiritual-filmic dimension. We could easily imagine Truth landing a sync placement in the credits of an Avatar film, Dune, or a psychedelic TV show like Nine Perfect Strangers.
What ultimately resonates is the idea of transformation. This is a song born from despair, but it doesn’t remain there. Matreya‘s journey from questioning and darkness towards healing is mirrored by the collaboration itself, with two Birmingham voices connecting across very different creative worlds.
Needless to say, we are fascinated by what Matreya is creating here. Truth feels ambitious, spiritual and cinematic, while remaining deeply personal, and we have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Matreya‘s wider discography, including Eagles, and I Saw The Light.
