In March, we featured Gianfranco Malorgio for tapping into a cerebral energy for his psychedelic and subversive single, Scattered Clouds, so when we found out that the visionary artist was back with An Immigrant’s Story, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
An Immigrant’s Story opens with a strummed electric guitar with haunting textures and cinematic, melancholic astral synths. We are immediately transported to a thought-provoking work before a sublime electric guitar solo takes us into a somber universe with a high emotional quotient.
We can imagine that fans of Carlos Santana would be able to connect with the guitar performance, the high notes tug on our heart’s strings as drums, bell tones and bold bass notes evoke a more dramatic sentiment mid-way through the opus. We connect with the intentional narrative of the piece and learn that it was composed with a potential film adaptation in mind, inspired by the hardship experienced by people forced to leave their homes in search of another life.
The Italian connection gives the track an especially personal historical dimension. An Immigrant’s Story pays tribute to Italian emigration, reflecting the enormous movement of people who left their homeland from the late nineteenth century and onwards.

There is no doubt that the piece holds a cinematic allure, and we could see it fitting naturally into a film like The Godfather Part II, particularly during its Sicilian and immigrant narrative. Brooklyn would also be a beautiful fit, and we could also imagine the track in The Immigrant. For a more contemporary placement, The Namesake feels equally compelling. Moreno Viglione‘s guitar performance moves between delicacy and intensity.
We are also fascinated by Malorgio’s background. He began playing classical guitar at a young age before studying with Maestro Giovanni Viola and later developing an extensive career across jazz, gypsy jazz, film music and composition. His work with Hot Club Roma brought him into collaboration with musicians including Dario Pinelli, Dorado Schmitt, Angelo Debarre and Tim Kliphuis. He has also contributed to film soundtracks, including The House Above the Clouds and Buoni a Nulla.
Needless to say, we are obsessed with An Immigrant’s Story and have added the piece to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the exquisite wider discography of Gianfranco Malorgio.
