Drawing us in with a shimmering, astral synth, a cerebral descending bass and atmospheric ad-libs of the artist’s name, Super Gasey opens Rari on Mars with fantastical, escapist prose and a captivating timbre. We are immediately obsessed with the visual imagery that manifests and Super Gasey‘s breathy delivery with trippy falsetto motifs.
As for the narrative of the song, Rari On Mars is essentially about escaping our circumstances and mentally transporting ourselves somewhere more limitless. In the high concept song, Super Gasey presents himself as an astronaut on Earth, physically in the trenches but mentally existing in another galaxy. This escapist tendencies feels particularly zeitgeist. So many of us share that very sentiment in an overwhelming world, so imagining another universe really does become its own form of freedom.
This is further cemented by the artwork of the song and album which sees the artist sat atop a car with a cannabis leaf on his chest and an astronaut’s helmet whilst the sky is chaotic with space ships and lightning strikes.
What makes Super Gasey‘s approach interesting is the philosophy behind it. It is about refusing to allow our environment dictate the size of our ambitions. Mars becomes a metaphor for creating your own reality. His quote, “I may be an astronaut on Earth, surrounded by the trenches but mentally in another galaxy. This project proves that your environment doesn’t have to limit your vision”, essentially captures the entire ethos of the record.

Darkkustupid‘s hypnotic production creates a vast outer-space atmosphere, with melodic trap elements. We could easily imagine Rari On Mars soundtracking a late-night sequence in Euphoria, a futuristic montage in Black Mirror. There are also shades of Blade Runner 2049 in the track’s nocturnal, otherworldly atmosphere.
Super Gasey’s influences from Future and Playboi Carti are super apparent in the fearless trap energy, but he is clearly using those foundations to construct something more personal. The track was recorded in his hometown of Indianapolis with engineer Johnny Kaz.
Needless to say, we are completely captivated by Rari On Mars and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Super Gasey including the entirety of his album, Astronaut on Earth.
