Our obsession with Tallulah Rendall seems to grow with every listen. We last featured the Brutal Deluxe Remix of Tallulah Rendall’s I Am Enough, and her cosmic opus, Radiate Love, so when we heard that Tallulah was back with Run, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in her universe once more.
Run opens with a meditative and emotive synthscape with astral vocal ad-libs before Tallulah Rendall shares a brooding, introspective vocal with the lyrics, “When I get scared, my body freezes, my eyes start scanning the floor, then my body trembles, and my tears start streaming, I panic looking for the door…”
Tallulah Rendall‘s range is sublime, tapping into almost operatic notions, ethereal vibes and dramatic bass tones. There is a deep authenticity to what she is sharing, and an undeniable cinematic allure. Fans of Cat Power, Michelle O Faith, and Lana Del Rey would be able to connect with Run.
As for the message of the song, it’s super relatable and something that many of us experience. Tallulah confesses, “For years I suffered from panic attacks that would leave me foetal. I remember once curling up, crying on the floor of a bar toilet, I felt so uncomfortable in my body, so scared, so awkward. Then the stress caused a nosebleed and I lay there, crumpled. My whole body shook with the fear, shame and confusion as I asked myself why I felt like this and how I could make it stop?”
It’s great to experience an artist sharing such depth with a cathartic output. Rather than romanticising anxiety, Tallulah Rendall confronts it head-on.
We could imagine Run soundtracking a psychological drama such as Black Swan, Aftersun or The Worst Person in the World. It would also work beautifully within an episode of I May Destroy You, Normal People or Big Little Lies.
The accompanying visual world enhances this beautifully, with Run filmed inside Bruce Munro‘s extraordinary Fireflies light installation. The illuminated pathways become a visual representation of the nervous system.
