We previously featured Dru Melodics for transforming personal struggle into resilience and self-belief on the powerful single, Skyfall, so when we heard that the independent UK songwriter and recording artist was back with Blessing In Disguise, we were curious to say the least and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Blessing In Disguise opens with intricate piano and astral textures with cosmic ad-libs, before expanding into situational yet somewhat metaphorical prose with a soft hip-hop production. Dru shares, “Now I’m off the greens foreign trips jet skis in the winter I’m headed Mont Blanc, snow boards skidoo’s snow chains there’s no chains…”
In essence, the track unfolds as a retrospective on everything Dru Melodics has been through since 2009. It touches upon mental health struggles, being sectioned, being released with conditions, and feeling like the system still controls his life. He admits to making mistakes, how he used to upset his mum, and made bad choices, but really he’s saying he’s grown up and is trying to live better.
Even though he’s still dealing with a diagnosis, legal problems, and people misunderstanding him, he refuses to give up on his music or himself. When he shares the hook, “it’s a blessing in disguise”, he means that all the pain and difficult experiences have also changed him, helped him find his feet, and made him stronger.
On his artistry, Dru confesses, “I see songwriting as autobiography set to music. Every lyric is grounded in lived experience, capturing moments of hardship, reflection and transformation. My work examines accountability, identity, recovery and resilience, inviting listeners into stories that are deeply personal yet universally human.”
We love the cinematic production and high emotional quotient of the track and the raw authenticity that transmutes. We could imagine Blessing In Disguise being featured in a TV show like The Day of the Jackal, or even an episode of Beauty in Black.
For some context, Dru Melodics is the artistic voice of Andrew Marshall, and Blessing In Disguise serves as the second single from his upcoming No Promises project. There is no doubt that fans of Eminem, J. Cole, Nas and Mike Skinner (The Streets), will be able to connect with what Dru Melodics is creating.
