Establishing the mood with a pulsating, rising synth, expanding into a dimensional and somewhat psychedelic energy with an unmistakeable cinematic allure, TrixxStarr open Enough with intrigue. We immediately connect with the atmospheric vocals and the raw authenticity that transmutes with the poetic prose.
Vocalist Dusty sings, “It doesn’t really take that much to keep me around, girl, rough n tough you got all the stuff but is it enough now, you didn’t want to wait and ask me, and now we’re sittin here getting nasty, I ask you one more time so tell me…” There is a whispered, conversational quality to the delivery, with the lyrics gradually revealing the tension underneath the track.
On a highly zeitgeist level, the song reflects on our constant pursuit of the things we are told should make us happy: relationships, money, status, recognition and success. That idea is mirrored beautifully in the accompanying animated video, which opens with luxury cars, a mansion and all the visual symbols of achievement, before slowly exposing the emptiness underneath. We appreciate the cinematic storytelling here.
Sonically, TrixxStarr create an interesting meeting point between psychedelic pop, synth-pop, post-punk and shoegaze. Speaking on the inception, Dusty confesses, “I wrote Enough as a reflection on chasing all the things we’re told should make us happy. At its core, it’s about deciding to stop living for everyone else’s expectations.”
The project’s evolution is equally interesting. Originally the solo project of Dusty Starr, TrixxStarr has expanded into a collaborative family affair, with siblings Pablo, Heli, C.C. and Dark joining the project. That broader lineup has allowed the sound to become increasingly fluid, incorporating new textures while retaining its psychedelic pop foundation.We could imagine Enough being played poolside on the rooftop of Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood, where trippy songs of this nature often find their home.
