We previously featured LaCosta Tucker for sharing an empowering message with her timeless single, Woman Behind the Wheel, so when we heard that the star was back with It Matters to Me, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in her universe again and share our experience.
It Matters to Me opens with a super intricate guitar soundscape with astral notions, rippling piano keys and strings as LaCosta sings, “Baby tell me where’d you ever learn to fight without sayin’ a word, then waltz back into my life, like it’s all gonna be alright, don’t you know how much it hurts, when we don’t talk, when we don’t touch, when it doesn’t feel like we’re even in love, it matters to me…”
LaCosta shares the pain of emotional distance and the relatable need to know that the person you love still cares. Her delivery gives the song an incredibly warm and heartfelt quality. We love how the track manages to feel both nostalgic and completely relevant.
At its core, this is a song about communication, vulnerability and that horrible feeling of wondering whether something that matters so deeply to you matters just as much to somebody else. We could totally imagine It Matters to Me soundtracking a tender, bittersweet moment in films like Steel Magnolias, Hope Floats or Sweet Home Alabama.
And knowing the story behind this recording makes the whole experience even more special. LaCosta had recorded It Matters to Me long before Faith Hill turned it into one of her signature hits, meaning we’re essentially getting to hear a little piece of country music history that has been sitting in the vault all these years. There is something really beautiful about finally getting the opportunity to hear LaCosta’s interpretation of a song that went on to become so well known.
Released on the lunar eclipse, It Matters to Me almost feels destined to arrive with a little cosmic energy of its own. The combination of the celestial opening, the emotional weight of the lyrics and LaCosta’s beautiful vocal presence makes this a particularly fitting moment to bring an old recording into the light.
We also couldn’t help but think about LaCosta’s history alongside some of country music’s biggest names. Her appearances on Dolly are another reminder of just how deeply embedded she is in the fabric of country music history, and with the late Dolly Parton having left such an enormous mark on the genre, it feels especially lovely to see artists from that era continuing to share their stories and music with new generations.
