Establishing the mood with an astral frequency and cosmic piano ripples, Evermo opens The Path with celestial dimensionality and introspection as he sings, “I’ve been walking on this path, since I decided to let you go, no matter which way I turn it all leads back to you…”
The opus expands with an epic 80s synth-pop energy with textured drums and a high emotional quotient as Evermo shares his lived experience and vulnerability with cinematic allure. We appreciate the raw authenticity that transmutes and there is no doubt that The Path would be perfect for a coming-of-age movie like Incoming, Marty Supreme, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Spectacular Now, or The Edge of Seventeen.
What makes The Path particularly fascinating is that the inception of the song itself actually began in a dream. Multi-disciplinary artist Emil Andersson woke in the middle of the night with the melody in his head and immediately recorded it on his phone before it disappeared. The following day, he finished the song with a classmate from music school. This notion of spontaneity and tangible realness remains within the composition.
There is a beautiful tension between the melancholia of the lyricism and the 80s-esque, danceable, masterful production. The song moves forwards even when Emil feels emotionally stuck. It’s symbolic and we can hear that contrast throughout the arrangement. Sonically, The Path sits between the cinematic melancholia of Coldplay, with the emotional piano-pop of Keane, and the nostalgic synth-pop vibes of a-ha.
We also appreciate the Stockholm influence within the narrative. Evermo describes The Path as reflecting the “melancholic cold” of city life alongside the desire to “open up”. That poignant duality gives the sentiment an additional layer. It feels personal, but the emotion is relatable.
The vocal performance is another highlight. There is a soul-baring quality to the delivery, with Evermo allowing the emotion to remain front and centre rather than hiding behind the production. As Cageriot previously described his voice, it is “nothing short of mesmerizing… a rare beauty that is impossible to ignore.”
