The track expands into a dimensional Latin-pop soundscape with hip-hop vibes and shades of Cardi B. The production feels expressive and celebratory, whilst YAZ‘s commanding delivery gives the track plenty of sass.
We appreciate the unapologetic nature of Who Said That?. This is a song about women refusing to shrink themselves, which feels zeitgeist and important, now more than ever with the rise in manosphere sensibilities. Whether as mothers, entrepreneurs, artists, or simply as women, YAZ immediately sets the tone with, “I don’t do the humble brag, I just brag / Four daughters, one husband, multiple bags”. There is something refreshing about the sheer honesty of it. No false modesty. No permission required.
The hook, “Who said that? I said that…”, becomes a mantra of self-belief. We also love the entrepreneurial vibrancy woven throughout the lyrics as YAZ declares” “I’m the blueprint, I’m the proof, I’m the product… built a whole business while y’all was being productive…”
We respect the cultural relevance of Who Said That?, particularly its celebration of modern Black womanhood and the pressure women face to make themselves smaller. YAZ‘s message is simple: “I don’t chase validation, I just run it up a stack, I don’t need your cosign, I already signed myself.” We are obsessed with that energy.
Cinematic in its larger-than-life quality, we could imagine Who Said That? soundtracking a fashion-forward montage in Barbie, a girls’ night sequence in Girls Trip, or the opening credits of a glossy series like Insecure. It would also work beautifully in a contemporary empowerment moment in The Idea of You, Do Revenge, or the upcoming new season of Beauty in Black.
Needless to say, Who Said That? feels like a confident statement from YAZ, blending hip-hop, R&B and pop with entrepreneurial spirit and genuine self-belief. We appreciate the way she turns her lived experience into an anthem, whilst the repeated declaration, “Crown on my head, living all my wildest dreams…”, feels like the perfect conclusion to the track’s philosophy.
