Drawing us in with a cymbal count-in, The Generation opens When I Tell You with a gritty surf-rock energy, before expanding into a melodic, guitar-driven soundscape with notions of grunge, punk and power pop. There is an immediate sense of movement, with crunchy guitars, infectious hooks and a raw analogue quality that gives the track plenty of character at a time when the music industry needs it the most!
We appreciate the emotional quotient of When I Tell You. Beneath the punky energy is an unabashed love song, with romantic lyrics about finding someone who changes everything. The band confesses, “I’m so glad that I could cry…”, before the irresistible hook, “When I tell you that I love you… that will tell you what was meant to be.” There is something beautifully earnest about it all.
We also love the cinematic quality of the storytelling. The song moves from falling in love to imagining wedding bells, with the narrator declaring, “We’re a match that’s made in heaven…” We could imagine When I Tell You in a nostalgic coming-of-age movie like Adventureland, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, or Sing Street. It would also work beautifully in a romantic montage in The Summer I Turned Pretty, or a sun-soaked indie film where everything suddenly feels possible.
What makes When I Tell You even more fascinating is its history. The song was originally recorded by The Generation during Washington, DC’s legendary mid-80s local scene, before the recordings disappeared for more than three decades. Buried in a London attic, the original analogue tapes have now been remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios.
We appreciate that sense of rediscovery. When I Tell You feels like a genuine time capsule, whilst the power-pop sensibilities, gritty guitars and romantic heart give it plenty of contemporary appeal. Fans of The Beach Boys would definitely be able to vibe.
