We last featured SHANNON DARCY for her raw anthem of self-discovery and vulnerability, i am, so when we heard that the talented star with a high emotional quotient was back with Treasures and Gold, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in her universe once again.
Treasures and Gold opens with a cinematic piano performance as SHANNON DARCY sings, “You talk to me so carefree, like you don’t know what you’ve done, and everyone, they tell me that you’ve had your chance, but I can’t help but think you’re not just anyone to me, am I really that deluded by insecurity…”
We immediately connect with the raw authenticity that transmutes, Shannon’s captivating British accent that fans of Lily Allen would be able to vibe with, and the stripped back energy with expanding strings. The opus evolves with a raw sensibility as SHANNON shares a tale of loving someone who hurt and neglected her.
It is clear that Shannon knows this person has failed her, but still cannot stop caring. The build of the song is super theatrical and the climax before the final chorus with textured drums has us in tears. Shannon shares how she feels ignored and emotionally distant and wonders why she still loves someone who keeps lying and giving empty apologies. In essence, the concept of Treasures and Gold represents the things that once felt valuable but are slowly losing their value.
Speaking on the release, Shannon confesses, “This is something different and a lot more raw than anything I’ve ever released. I wrote this song at a time when I was feeling quite low and unwanted by a person in my life who is supposed to be there for me, and truthfully, never really has been there.”
She adds, “Essentially, this song is my letter to them – words that I wish I could say to them, but I suppose I’m too afraid to say to their face. I know this person loves me, but as I have grown older, I have come to realise how much their actions have hurt me. I hope that anyone who hears this song and has gone through anything similar can find some comfort in the fact that they’re not alone. Unfortunately, some people don’t change, but that’s not your fault. It’s taken me a long time to grasp that concept myself, and songwriting and music has helped me to express that.”
We could imagine Treasures and Gold landing a sync placement in a series like Normal People, The Shards, or Fleabag, and song totally reminds us of the more vulnerable side of Lily Allen with her distinctly British vocal character, but there is also something beautifully theatrical in Shannon’s delivery that brings to mind the emotional storytelling of Kate Nash and the intimate piano-driven balladry of Sara Bareilles.
