We last featured Eric Osterhout as he explored loneliness, human connection and redemption on the powerful single, Dive Bar Love Story, so when we heard that Eric was back with Green Eyed Angel, we couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his sonic universe again and share our experience.
Green Eyed Angel opens with a shimmering guitar soundscape with cosmic frequencies and a high emotional quotient. The opus expands with poetic prowess as Eric shares narrative-driven lyrics and a captivating, cinematic story. We connect with the classic Texas Country energy, and how we are fully transported into a world of dive bars, dancehalls, dusty roads and complicated romance.
There is an undeniable cinematic quality to the track and we could imagine Green Eyed Angel landing a sync placement in a film like Crazy Heart, The Wrong Paris (on Netflix) or a series such as Yellowstone. Green Eyed Angel poignantly tells the story of attraction with a warning label attached. Eric’s muse makes it clear that she isn’t offering promises or permanence, but he is already too captivated to walk away. Sometimes the most intense connections aren’t built to last.
The visual imagery is incredible. It’s brilliantly written and the fusion of classic country storytelling with a contemporary production aesthetic and choral vocals is super refined. We feel like we are living the story of the song in HD. Eric Osterhout‘s songwriting places him firmly within the tradition of Texas storytellers, with influences including Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jerry Jeff Walker and Waylon Jennings. Those influences definitely manifest clearly on Green Eyed Angel.
