We previously featured Mark Cee as he reflected on grief and resilience with his poignant folk single, How You Left Me Still, so when we heard that Mark was back with Missed Connection, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Missed Connection opens with a live set-up atmospheric energy that expands with intricate and glistening acoustic guitar and cosmic flute detailing as Mark sings, “It’s a missed connection, our souls are in the wrong direction… as I stare at your picture, taken so long, so long ago, I hope you know that you were everything to me…”
We immediately connect with the raw authenticity and the high emotional quotient that manifests. The subject matter of the song is open to interpretation. It could be about the loss of a loved one, or a relationship, or simply an astral journey of lives that never crossed – the lyrics are open enough for us to connect with on a multitude of levels.
Whilst How You Left Me Still reminded us of Bob Dylan, Mark’s energy on this one really reminds us of early Elliott Smith, the analogue warmth and Mark’s delicate vocals manifest in a sublime and cohesive tapestry of sound. In an age of so much digital noise, what Mark Cee is creating feels raw, organic and much-needed. It is no surprise that his artistry has also drawn comparisons to Bon Iver, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, and Iron & Wine.

We appreciate Mark Cee‘s commitment to preserving the human element of songwriting. Missed Connection was recorded at his home studio, resulting in a super intimate listening experience that feels timeless. We could imagine Missed Connection being featured in a film like the Oscar-winning, One Battle After Another, or even Spielberg’s Disclosure Day.
Needless to say, we have added Missed Connection to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to look forward to Mark Cee’s forthcoming EP, It’s Me, Mark Cee. Make sure to follow Mark Cee’s Spotify artist profile and save the track to your personal library!
