We previously featured The Expo for channelling cosmic melancholy and retro-futurism with the dynamic debut single, Eclipse, so when we heard that The Expo were back with This Time, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
This Time opens with an ethereal, rising guitar soundscape, intricate and sublime. We appreciate the atmospheric and zen notions that manifest with a cinematic allure that fans of Sufjan Stevens and Air will be able to connect with. We could imagine the track being featured in a Luca Guadagnino or Sofia Coppola film.
The message of the song holds a timelessness, and we deeply connect with the power-pop 60s adjacency and the emotive chord changes that remind us of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The instrumentation forms an immersive and cohesive tapestry of sound, and the solo taps into an almost 90s grunge meets 80s ballad vibes before returning to the minor chord refrain. Again, this truly showcases how The Expo are delivering a genre expansive experience with a touch of psychedelia.
This Time would be perfect to listen to poolside on the rooftop of Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood where trippy songs of this nature often find their home. The final moments of the song introduce a cerebral melody that sends us astral and leaves us reaching for the repeat button.
