Drawing us in with a sublime guitar soundscape featuring psychedelic nuance, Coconut Shy open Mayfield Blush with poetic prowess and the reassuring prose, “Hey, leave it for a bad place, leave it for a sad face, forgetting it all, June, we’ll be in the same space…”
We immediately connect with the timeless nature of the song and the cinematic allure that manifests. We could imagine Mayfield Blush securing a sync placement in a film like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The instrumentation is intricate and comes to life with instrumental mastery, whilst Joseph Mackey‘s vocals exude authenticity as he shares his soul.
In essence, Mayfield Blush is about the relatable sentiment of feeling unsure in a relationship. It is about wanting honesty instead of silence. Joseph shares how he struggles with mixed emotions, feeling hurt, confused, and afraid of caring more than his muse does.
The lyrics describe trying to move on whilst still feeling connected to someone who might not need or want the same relationship. In the end, it is about wanting clarity. The middle eight features the hook, “Icky-icky walls – I can’t even crawl…” which is a really memorable moment of the song and has a lot of potential for TikTok.
For some context, Joseph Mackey wrote the song and performed the vocals and acoustic guitar. Dylan Noble plays bass, and Timothy Chivers shares his skill on electric guitar, whilst Matt Meehan-Lam delivers a high emotional quotient on drums. The song was produced by Simon Paparo.
Joseph tells us, “Mayfield Blush explores unrequited feelings, uncertainty and the quiet process of acceptance – catching yourself out when you entertain the flawed idea that someone owes you reciprocation. It came from understanding that sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is simply accept reality. Sometimes reality doesn’t match your hopes but that doesn’t make the experience meaningless.”
We also learn that the “Blush” of the song refers to a “fleeting crush and emotional vulnerability” and “Mayfield” came from a mistaken memory whereby Joseph realised he had accidentally remembered the name of the Hobart bar as The Mayfield instead of The Mayfair.
