We previously featured Beat The Drum for the powerful and introspective single, It’s All Gonna Go, so when we heard that the talented duo was back with Try a little bit harder, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Try a little bit harder opens with an alluring piano performance and tremolando strings with subtle, textured drums and muted trumpet. The opus expands with a brooding timbre and the self-reflective lyrics, “Working harder.. I’ve known money but I am working harder, and the more I give, the more my debt gets larger, but I’m trying, I try a little harder every day…”
The message of the song is real and relatable. We connect with the high emotional quotient, but also the simple yet poignant context. There is no doubt that Try a little bit harder would be perfect for a sync placement in a TV show like Succession, or Severance, which directly reflects the core expression of the track.
The evolution of the track results in a cohesive and dimensional tapestry of sound that has us enthralled with its refined and elegant energy. Choral harmonies that emerge with a 60s adjacency further add to this charm and charisma, whilst the finale is intriguing and naturally cinematic, leading through to a trip-hop production, ad-libs and vocalizations of the title of the track.
