Establishing the mood with subtle nature sounds and a meditative, immersive synthscape with astral, cosmic details, R3trØ Riq opens Flight 69 with dimensionality and zen. The production expands into an ethereal R&B universe with intricate piano as R3trØ Riq sings, “Hope it ain’t too sentimental, feelings can’t hold you down, tryna get my heart and my mental, aside till we’re floating off the ground…”
In essence, Flight 69 uses the metaphor of a plane ride to describe an intimate romantic and sexual experience. It’s cleverly written and the flight symbolizes escapism. In that sense, the prose feels highly zeitgeist as many of us feel trapped in our realities, and R3trØ Riq offers us a chance to fly with him. His delivery and aura are sublime and we love the intricate details that come to life with the production.
Naturally, concepts of rising temperatures, turbulence, altitude, and the notions of touching the sky represent a growing passion, excitement and human connection. Riq invites us to let go of fear and trust him. He encourages us not to “fold under pressure” but to enjoy the moment.
Whilst the song is filled with innuendos, it also hints at a desire for genuine closeness. We could imagine this being featured in a TV show like Beauty in Black on Netflix, or an episode of Euphoria on HBO. Speaking on his influences, R3trØ Riq confesses, “Flight 69 draws inspiration from artists who combine smooth vocals with honest storytelling and memorable melodies. Influences such as PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake, The Weeknd, Brent Faiyaz, and Tory Lanez inspired the song’s atmospheric production, melodic approach, and emotionally driven writing.”
We can absolutely feel this manifest, although it is also clear that R3trØ Riq is manifesting a sonic universe of his own design. Flight 69 was recorded in R3trØ Riq‘s converted dining room studio in Columbia, South Carolina, where he independently wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced the track.
