Drawing us in with a cerebral roar, expanding into a dimensional, glistening dance-pop soundscape with euphoric ad-libs and a vocalization of “It’s Teena…”, Teena opens I’m Bored with dimensionality and intrigue.
Teena shares the poetic lyrics, “Bright lights, please get to the chorus, city nights, I am not here to bore us, super star, yeah I know you’re watching…” accompanied by a dramatic and cinematic production as she takes us on a timeless journey with a fierce EDM-pop build.
Fans of Madonna‘s current Confessions II era will be able to connect with what Teena is creating, as will millions of RuPaul’s Drag Race fans. What makes this stand out is the authenticity. The hook, “But most of all I’m bored, when I’m not being me…” is an amazing and defiant manifesto of self-created identity.
On a more unserious note, Teena tells us, “I’m bored of people saying I am a man, my pregnancies weren’t a sham”, though the middle eight she sings, “We only have one life to live, there’s no second chance…” as the drag artist encourages us to be ourselves.
This leads through to an EPIC key change for the final chorus, which feels super euphoric and cements the overarching message of the song. We are obsessed with how Teena proves that drag is at its most powerful when it is unapologetically funny, fearless and absurd.
Teena is also known as actor, comedian, writer and producer Lucien Jack, and we learn that I’m Bored sets the tone for her forthcoming album, I’m Too Famous, before continuing its story on stage in her Edinburgh Fringe show Who’s The Daddy.
