Establishing the mood with a super dimensional and cerebrally immersive soundscape, fusing art rock with electronica, DREAMGOOD opens Yo Ego with poetic prowess and the conceptual, philosophical lyrics, “Your ego has a hole in its balloon, it’s flying wildly, wildly across the room in all directions…”
We immediately connect with the intelligent songwriting, the deeply human sonic experience and the instrumental mastery that manifests. The track has a cinematic allure, and we could imagine it in a movie like the Oscar-winning, One Battle After Another, or Marty Supreme, which both featured characters that reflect the energy of the song.
The message of the track feels really zeitgeist, and is essentially about a person’s relationship with their own ego. From our perspective, there are two types of ego, the one that we need to survive and create the best reality for ourselves and our shared collective, but there is also the part of ourselves that wants to feel important, confident and admired.
Rather than treating the ego as purely bad, DREAMGOOD presents it as both a friend and an enemy. It is a consciously written track that acknowledges that ego can give us confidence and drive, but can also make us insecure, arrogant, and cause unnecessary conflict. The metaphorical vibes are exquisite.
We definitely vibe with how the song uses humour and surrealism to show how the ego can spiral out of control. The song is energetic and playful, whilst the music video exaggerates this chaos with psychedelic expansion visuals, exploding muscles, black holes, and swirling electricity. These images poignantly suggest how an inflated ego can distort reality.
At its core, the call to action of Yo Ego is innate self-awareness. It is an invitation to notice the constant push and pull, and laugh at our own ego while recognizing that it’s a natural part of being human. The decapitated artwork is also a great nod to this concept!
