We previously featured Carmen Rose Davidson when she shared an important message for women on her epic and genre-expansive single, Make Sure, so when we found out that Carmen was back with Whiskey & Sin, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Drawing us in with a meditative frequency, Whiskey & Sin opens with Carmen’s captivating vocals as she shares the introspective, philosophical prose, “I see life as a funny game, as I sit here dreaming of all the ways, I’ve cast out my demons, I repent of my sins, worked at a loss, when will I win?”
What we admire about Carmen Rose Davidson is her raw authenticity as she lays it all bare with these subtle inflections in her timbre which are deeply human, perfectly aligned with her blues-rock and gospel influenced sound. We can tell that she is writing from her soul and this manifests in a cinematic allure.
Whiskey & Sin would be perfect for a sync placement in a TV show like All’s Fair, or Beauty In Black, or films like A Star Is Born, When a Man Loves a Woman and Beautiful Boy, which all parallel the concept of the song.
The build of the production is sublime and manifests in a high emotional quotient as we navigate Carmen’s lived experience and her resentment towards the poisons that resulted in her father’s demise.
In essence, the lyrics of Whiskey & Sin confront the impact of her father’s alcoholism. It’s very relatable to anyone who has experienced something similar. The prose traces the pain of addiction whilst ultimately finding hope and forgiveness. The song was intentionally released alongside an animated video for Alcohol Awareness Week. The final moments are stripped back after an epic and stadium-ready climax. It’s timeless and poetic artistry at is most raw and real.
Carmen cites inspiration from Dolly Parton, Tina Turner and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, but there is no doubt that she is creating a universe of her own that explores trauma, faith, addiction and catharsis. Carmen’s stage presence is iconic, and she has performed at venues including the Roundhouse, Rich Mix and The Bullingdon.
