The opus expands into a stadium-ready sound, designed with precision as Plain Drifter shares philosophical lyrics laced with poetic prowess.
We connect with the intelligent songwriting immediately as the artist conveys wisdom and thought-provoking depth. The hook, “I’ve got a Canine Reputation, you’re guilty in their eyes once they catch your scent…” is particularly striking.
The track is an assertive commentary on identity, resilience, and refusing to be defined by the opinions of others. It’s extremely well written, and we could imagine it in a werewolf TV show, but also a movie like Limitless, or the Oscar-winning, One Battle After Another.
We love how the hard-hitting track explores labels and rumours of how we are perceived. It hones in on the idea of staying true to oneself and is an empowering track, driven by heavy guitar riffs and an anthemic chorus, which is perfect for the gym, a run, a drive or a moment to ourselves when we want to feel the canine power from within. The guitar solo is literally transcendental, leading through to an epic final chorus.
Visually, the track’s lyrics are amazing. We love the analogy of “one loose tongue” and the idea of being judged before a trial, guilty before being proven innocent and the idea of being labelled a drifter or fool for being rough around the edges. It also kinda doubles as an animal rights song, because of how humans treats other species. In that sense, it is very zeitgeist.
The track was written, recorded, mixed, and produced entirely by artist Sam Lillicrap in his home studio on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Australia. Fans of AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge, Shinedown, The Cult, and Stone Temple Pilots will be able to vibe with the sound, and the raw and authentic conviction that transpires, but Plain Drifter is also creating a philosophical sonic universe of his own.
