Drawing us in with cerebral breath-like frequencies and an intimate guitar performance, Rorksha opens Récif with cinematic allure and a brooding timbe as he shares the French lyrics, “Si tes abysses, te foudroient, je serai récif à tes bras, ma main mon ancre, à toi…”
This loosely translates into English as, “If your depths strike you down, I will be the reef in your embrace, my hand your anchor, for you…”. We immediately connect with the poetic prowess, the high emotional quotient and the metaphorical depth.
The opus expands with hummed ad-libs and textured percussion that builds with an almost meditative yet melancholic energy. This leads us through to a super immersive synthscape with trip-hop drums driving the momentum. We are reminded of the French band Noir Désir and even early Jacques Brel to some extent, but with a futuristic edge.
Récif is a sublimely emotive work of art that comes in at just over ten minutes. It ebbs and flows through minimalist notions that truly tap into our heart’s centre, and there is no doubt that this could be used as the score to a film like Amour, Intouchables, or a Darren Aronofsky film. We could also imagine this being played on FIP Radio.
The return of the acoustic guitar is welcomed, intertwined with a subversive, atmospheric soundscape. Speaking on the release, Rorksha says, “It depicts a fight against our fears: the main character struggles against them but fails, until an entity saves him and takes him away to try to repair him. This is an allegory of the song’s meaning.”
As for his prose, the multi-disciplinary artist, who also created the sci-fi art video for the song, confesses, “The lyrics describe a declaration – promising to always be there for someone who is lost, acting as a reef for them to hold onto.”
The guitar pulls out once more for the final ninety seconds of the composition which has us in tears by this point, emotionally overwhelmed at the authenticity and pure artistry that manifests. Needless to say, we are in awe, and have added Récif to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Rorksha.
