Drawing us in with cerebral beeps and an intricate piano performance, DARNELL opens Operate with a sublime vocal performance and introspective depth as he sings, “Couldn’t find the time to try to involve with my own life, love is blind, so am I, couldn’t see, I didn’t try…”
We immediately connect with the smooth R&B timelessness with a contemporary mix. There is no doubt that fans of Usher and early Boyz II Men would be able to vibe with what DARNELL has created. As for the concept of the song, it’s intelligently written with metaphors between love and the operating table.
In a way, it feels super visceral, but really it just manifests in romantic notions. The expansion into a drum and bass production is simply genius and feels super inspiring, cathartic and adds dimensionality to the track.
In essence, Operate is about taking responsibility for the end of a relationship, tapping into ownership instead of blame. We learn that it was written after DARNELL‘s breakup with his fiancée. In the lyrics, the London-based artist reflects on his own mistakes, regrets and the realization that he contributed to the downfall of the relationship.

The focus is on accountability, self-awareness, and emotional growth is inspiring, and his conscious perspective and growth really come through in the track. We could imagine it in a film like Voicemails for Isabelle, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Instead of portraying himself as a victim, DARNELL consciously examines the consequences of his actions and the loneliness that followed. It’s a brilliant redemption song and an acknowledgement of heartbreak and regret, but fundamentally about learning from our mistakes, seeking forgiveness, and becoming a better person.
We love what DARNELL has created, and have added Operate to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of DARNELL, including Follow, and Staring at the Moon.
