Ryan Murphy is returning to familiar territory with The Shards, a dark, stylish and deeply unsettling new thriller that could become one of the most talked-about TV events of the year. Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ bestselling novel, the FX series blends coming-of-age drama, psychological horror, murder mystery and high-school obsession into one irresistible package.
Set in Los Angeles in 1981, The Shards follows a teenage version of Ellis during his final year at an elite prep school. As a series of brutal murders terrorises the city, a mysterious new student named Robert Mallory arrives on campus. The timing feels far from coincidental, and paranoia begins to consume the school’s privileged social circle. The result is a story packed with secrets, suspicion and escalating danger.
Leading the cast is Kaia Gerber, who reunites with Murphy after previous appearances in his television universe. Gerber plays Susan Reynolds, one of the key figures in the story, and the role is expected to be her biggest television showcase yet. Joining her is rising star Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis, while Homer Gere takes on the pivotal role of the enigmatic Robert Mallory. Graham Campbell rounds out the core friend group as Thom Wright. The ensemble also includes Hayes Warner, Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood and Jordan Roth.
What makes The Shards especially intriguing is its seductive atmosphere. Like many of Murphy’s most successful projects, the series appears determined to balance glamour with darkness. Think expensive cars, prep-school uniforms, pool parties, wealth and youthful beauty – all set against the backdrop of a serial killer stalking Los Angeles. Early descriptions have labelled the show a coming-of-age story, an erotic thriller and a murder mystery all at once.
Murphy has built a career turning stylish excess into compelling television, and The Shards looks perfectly designed for that approach. With its gorgeous young cast, simmering sexual tension, high-fashion aesthetics and sinister mystery, the series has all the ingredients of a binge-worthy obsession.
If Murphy delivers on the novel’s unsettling mix of desire, danger and paranoia, The Shards could be the next must-watch thriller dominating pop-culture conversation.
The Shards premieres on August 5, 2026, on FX and Hulu in the United States, while UK viewers will be able to stream the series exclusively on Disney+ from August 6, 2026.
