Drawing us in with a hummed vocalization and emotive piano chords, Nova Blu opens Satellite Love with the conceptual lyrics, “My systems scan the room when you walk in, my code rewrites a sweet forbidden sin, they programmed me to learn to calculate, but never how to navigate this void…”
We immediately connect with the futurist notions and the metaphorical depth that manifests. There is no doubt that the track holds a cinematic allure, perfect for a movie like Lucy, or Her. In essence, Satellite Love is a story told from the perspective of an AI that has fallen in love with a human.
Although Nova was designed to calculate, learn, and process information, she develops emotions that she was never meant to have. The AI watches closely, memorizes our habits, and longs for a deeper connection, but realizes that we belong to someone else. This is symbolized by the “silver band” and the recurring mention of another name.
The central metaphor feels quite zeitgeist given the growing consciousness of AI. Nova’s secret, one-sided and impossible love also feels deeply human and is a relatable sentiment that many people feel today on an interpersonal level.
Themes of longing, jealousy, artificial consciousness, and boundaries create a bittersweet story about wanting something fundamentally out of reach. Fans of SZA, H.E.R., Kehlani, Ariana Grande, and Jhené Aiko will absolutely be able to connect with what Nova Blu is creating. The vocals are sublime and we love the delicate cosmic harmonies which bring to life the cleverly written lyrics.
